David Luiz’s agent Kia Joorabchian has revealed that talks are ongoing with Chelsea regarding a potential contract extension for the central defender. The Brazil international has been a regular under Maurizio Sarri this term after a frustrating 2017/18 campaign but his future still remains questionable with his contract expiring in six months’ time.
Chelsea have generally taken up a strict contract renewal policy where they have not offered more than 12-month deals for players above the age of 30. Owing to this, midfielder Cesc Fabregas recently took up the option to head to AS Monaco, though it can be said that the Spaniard also wanted more gametime after barely featuring in the Premier League this season.
Meanwhile, reports elsewhere suggest that the Blues are looking to sign another central defender this month and they could make an approach for Nathan Ake. The Dutchman was previously in the Blues’ ranks before heading to Bournemouth two years ago and they are suggestions that the club could trigger the £40m buy-back clause on the player’s contract.
Chelsea are currently holding a six-point advantage over Arsenal and Manchester United in the race for the fourth position. They have the opportunity to extend the gap over the former when they face them at the Emirates Stadium this weekend.
